Hernando County Composite Squadron, SER-FL-301 hosted a SAREX for Group 3 on 20 Jan 07 at Brooksville (BKV). The training exercise was used to obtain new sign offs for those members wishing to obtain ratings in the areas of MS, MO, MSO, MRO, and ABD. Additionally other members performed in various other capacities to maintain their proficiency.
Lt. Len Goellner acted as the IC for the SAREX and flight crews flew 16 sorties supported by the mission base staff. As it seems most ELT missions are flown at night, this exercise also encompassed several night sorties in order to simulate actual mission conditions. Scenarios were also set up to measure the performance of mission base staff and flight crew when a simulated emergency occurred during a normal flight.
I personally benefited from the night training, flying as MO, as it reminded me of the additional preparation required to fly at night. You must constantly keep in mind the safety factors involved in inspecting the aircraft (i.e. be sure you have a flash light). Additionally you must be able to read the sectionals and perform other duties while in a dimmed cockpit, so have a flash light available that will not cause temporary night blindness.
All CAP members present had a chance to participate and obtain training that is necessary to meet mission requirements. Read more on the FL Wing web site.
